The idea to build a biodiesel factory in Emmen came about around 2002, according to Director Wilfred Hadders of Sunoil Biodiesel. The first idea came about from a former shareholder, a German agricultural cooperative. In Germany, biodiesel was on the rise at that time. It was also heavily stimulated by the German government”.
Hadders continues: “In every regular diesel fuel, a percentage of biodiesel had to be mixed and no excise duty was levied on pure biodiesel. This made it very attractive for German transport companies to switch to biodiesel”.
At first, the Netherlands was rather lagging behind in terms of the promotion of biodiesel as a fuel, because there was no additional obligation here at that time. ,,In the meantime, we have gained a lot of knowledge and are therefore able to respond well to the market needs. Companies know that they can come to us for high-quality products, but also when it comes to biodiesel issues,” says Wilfred Hadders.

At the time we were already a member of the then CO2 sounding board group in The Hague. We were also a member of the Corbey Commission (biomass sustainability issues). Sunoil has been a pilot company for the Dutch government with regard to the introduction and getting the so-called double counting scheme that still exists today.
